Richard Liu, Founder Of JD.com
Richard Liu is well-known throughout the Chinese business world as the founder of the hugely successful e-commerce website JD.com. Born in 1974, Liu grew up in Jiangsu Province and attended The People’s University of China.
After graduating, Liu Qiangdong experienced several business failures in the restaurant business before pivoting to selling health products – but it was not until 1998 that he started his own retail business specializing in computer parts in Beijing.
As his business began to take off, it was hit hard by the SARS epidemic of 2004; undeterred, Liu quickly converted his company into an online-only venture, and he established JD.com. Just 12 years later, net revenues had reached a staggering US$37 billion and floated on NASDAQ with a market capitalization of US$44 billion.
In addition to being a hugely successful businessman, Richard Liu has developed an Internet celebrity status due mainly to his wealth, youthfulness, and charismatic personality. He is so influential that JD.com’s board cannot form a quorum without his presence – an impressive feat for someone who started with nothing more than computer parts and some ambition back in 1998.
Qiangdong is highly regarded for his accomplishments in the Chinese eCommerce market. He was awarded “China Economic Person of the Year” by China’s largest television network CCTV in 2011 and was named “Chinese Business Leader” that same year. Fortune China recognized him as one of their “2012 Chinese Businessmen.”
His accomplishments have also been noted on several lists compiled by Forbes, wherein he was ranked #165 on the 2020 Billionaires list, he’s #40 on China’s Rich List of 2020, and #25 on the Richest in Tech 2017 list. During a discussion regarding Liu and his rankings, Fortune recognized him as having no pretentiousness or corporate ego, remarking that he had “few of the trappings of a celebrity CEO.” Furthermore, they included Liu in their listing of “World’s Greatest Leaders” at #48.
